super normal

February 9, 2010

in furniture studio last spring we read a great article about the Super Normal exhibition being put on by designers Jasper Morrison and Naoto Fukusawa.  the basic idea is design that works by not really being noticed, at least not on a conscious level.  maybe as you are opening that hundredth bottle of wine you suddenly realize that the corkscrew you’ve had all these years could never be improved upon.  it just works.  quietly, calmly, but without fail.  but also that the corkscrew might actually improve the more you use it – one interpretation of the japanese idea of wabi-sabi (as i understand it).  the idea behind the term lagom in reference to design is really very similar, which is precisely why i was taken with the work of both Jasper Morrison and Naoto Fukusawa…
